Effective Seated Exercises for Wheelchair-Bound Seniors

Effective Seated Exercises for Wheelchair-Bound Seniors

Exercise is not limited to individuals with normal physical or mental health. In fact, having limited mobility doesn’t mean you can’t experience the health benefits of exercise. With the help from a provider of healthcare in Ohio, there are still plenty of ways you can use exercise to boost your mood, ease depression, relieve stress and anxiety, enhance your self-esteem, and improve your whole outlook on life.

Even if you or your loved ones are already seniors or homebound, caregivers from a non-medical home care in Beachwood, Ohio can help you perform the following strength training exercises to improve your daily life:

  1. Chest Squeeze with, or without, a medicine ball
This exercise is good for beginners to strengthen their muscles in the arms and chest. Sit up straight with abs engaged to support the muscles in the back; press your palms together at chest level and push them forward until your elbows are nearly straight. Slowly pull the palms back to your chest and repeat. You can also hold a medicine ball, rubber ball, or balloon instead of your bare palms.
  2. Toe Taps
To strengthen your leg muscles, do this easy exercise. Sit up straight with abs engaged and feet flat on the ground. Tilt your toes up towards the ceiling and then back down to the floor. Repeat several times. You can also increase the level of difficulty by raising one leg in the air while you tilt your toes up and down several times.
  3. Captain’s Chair
This exercise strengthens the muscles of the core and abs. Simply sit up straight and grab the front edge of your seat with both hands. Slowly lift both of your feet off the floor, bending your knees towards your chest as you do. Lift your feet as high as you comfortably can, and lower both feet back to the floor.
